Beginning of Phase 2
Agenda
- Phase 1 Reflection
- Phase 2 Assignment ( Web | Word | PDF )
- Summary (handout) ( Word | PDF )
- Digital Portfolio (Web | Word | PDF )
I expect today to be a more discussion day, thus, the notes here will be lighter and are intended more as a guide to keep us on track.
Phase 1 “Reflection”
Let’s just look over our shoulder quickly and note some features of the previous phase. Let’s also discuss what might be different. What will be different – and I hope starting today – is more direct participation from more students and, specifically, the offering of work to share in a common discussion.
THIS MAY FEEL UNCOMFORTABLE AT FIRST!
Of course it will, but we can honor that and work with that together. It is essential, however, that we work with the discomfort and make it work for us and our writing. The more we share – even when we make “mistakes” – the more we learn from each other, not just about what is “right”, but how writing works. We should note here that we should embrace our “mistakes” because it is from those that we learn the most, as most of us probably already know.
Phase 2 Assignment
Let’s just read the assignment prompt together ( Web | Word | PDF ). As we do so, let us note some of its features because contained within the assignment prompts are signposts about where we are headed, and WHY we are doing some of the things we are going to be doing. Example: we will see the word SUMMARY appear 6 times in the assignment prompt. From this we can draw the provisional conclusion that summarizing is a key strategy in writing academic texts.
Summary “Handout”
Before we get to the summary handout ( Word | PDF ), let’s look at the homework for today. Is the charting exercise homework a kind of very basic summary – or at least notes for a summary? Here is where I’m looking for more direct participation.
Digital Portfolio
Assignment Prompt (Web | Word | PDF ): for those that want t detailed preview. For our purposes today, we will note the simple fact that we all are required to do an online portfolio that houses your work. I feel no particular need to dive into this assignment in detail now, but I do want to propose that we start to enter a planning phase and we roll out our portfolios moving forward. We can scaffold the websites (build them as we go) from here through the end of the semester. Perhaps we can dedicate a few minutes each class to adding a little something and this will prevent a large-scale build-out at the end of the semester. Let’s discuss. maybe we can do a workshop or two outside of class. Thoughts????
