Class Session: November 24, 2020

Agenda

  • Website: Student Digital Portfolio – an essential part of Phase 4

Today we will be focused exclusively on the Student Digital Portfolio. We will review what it is, what is expected of it, and we will begin building it in class.

This page is a visual guide in how to “clone” (or copy, really) the template that I have built. Once you have done this, the template will then be yours as your website/digital portfolio in which you will place, at minimum, the required writing (the major assignments and cover letters) this semester.

As a reminder, they are:

  • Literacy Narrative: Drafts 1 and 2
  • Rhetorical Analysis Essay: Drafts 1 and 2 (draft 2 was post feedback)
  • Research Essay: The draft submitted for review (Draft 2) and your final revised draft.
  • Self-Assessment Essay (your final paper)
  • Your Cover Letters for each essay (Literacy Narrative, Rhetorical Analysis Essay, Research Essay).

To begin….

Step 1: Go to https://commons.gc.cuny.edu/

On the homepage of CUNY Academic Commons, click “Sites” in the navigation bar. (Be sure you are signed into CUNY Academic Commons!!!)

Step 2:

Clicking “Sites” will bring you to this page. Click the button that is labeled “Create a Site”.

Step 3:

The “Create a Site” button brings you to this page. It’s a longer page, so please scroll to the bottom and click the button labeled “Create a Site”. Yes, it’s another button that says the same as the previous page, but it’s just how it works. NOTE: Be careful here! CHOOSE THE BUTTON IN THE CENTER COLUMN. I have an arrow pointing to the correct button.

NOTE: THINGS HERE GET A LITTLE MORE DETAILED FROM HERE – BUT IT’S STILL VERY STRAIGHTFORWARD. JUST WATCH YOUR DETAILS AND YOU WILL BE FINE!!

Step 4:

You are now on the page where you will have the “Clone an Existing Site” option. Select that option.

Step 5:

The page should then refresh and you will get a drop-down menu. The red arrow is highlighting that drop-down menu.

Step 6:

From that drop-down menu, please select “Student Portfolio Sample Site”. (I expect that in most cases this will be the only option you are provided.)

Step 7:

On this page you will have to fill in a few things. I’ve listed them below, but you can also refer to the image for guidance.

  1. SITE DOMAIN: You can create whatever you like, but I believe it is limited to 15 characters. TIP: I suggest you choose something to do with your name. Many people choose to use their CUNY Academic Commons user name here, or some version of their name. It really is up to you, but do give it some thought.
  2. SITE TITLE: You need to choose a site title. I believe you can leave this empty and the current title will remain until you change it. Just remember, whatever you do, this can be changed later on in your website.
  3. CAMPUS: This should already have City College selected. If not, please do so.
  4. PRIMARY PURPOSE: Select “Portfolio” from the drop-down menu.
  5. ACADEMIC TERM: Choose Fall 2020
  6. DISCIPLINARY CLUSTER: This should be “Arts and Humanities”.

Step 8:

PRIVACY OPTIONS: This is really up to you. However, for privacy purposes, I recommend choosing option 3 or 4. These both keep your work within, and only available to, the larger CUNY academic community.

YOUR FINAL STEP HERE: Click the “Clone Site” button.

Once you have cloned your site, your screen may “pause” for a moment while this is processed, but one the processing is done, you should get a page that say something like “site successfully cloned” and “go to site”. We will review this in class.

NEXT STEPS….

This next step – adding me as a subscriber – is a necessary step.

Go to the DASHBOARD of your site….

Once in the DASHBOARD, you will need to go to the side navigation panel, and select USERS then go to “Add New”.

Once you have clicked “Add New” you will get a window that looks like the image below. In the “INVITE BY EMAIL” box, put my email address: [email protected]

Then, click “NEXT”

The NEXT button will take you to the window pictured below. From the drop down box to the right of the site name, you will select to add me as a “SUBSCRIBER”.

Once you have selected “SUBSCRIBER”, click the NEXT button.

On the next page (pictured below) confirm that you have invited me, the site name, and my role as “SUBSCRIBER”. Hit the SUBMIT button.

FINALLY……

Send me the URL of your website via email.
