  1. I am interested in talking about alcohol in adolescents because I think this becomes a serious problem in our society, and this is the topic we need to talk about. I do not have any personal experience with this issue, nor do my friends or relatives serve this issue but I see my surrounded people serve this issue. And I think I need to address this issue because it affects our society and its people negatively. It does not affect me directly but it affects me indirectly because I am living in a society where alcohol takes place in adolescents. I am interested to know more about my topic, I want to explore this topic and let others know the danger of it. Yeah, there were so many interesting facts about the topic that I found in my sources. I found some facts that I did not know before thinking about this topic. I found research results, statistics that did base on alcoholic adolescents,s and I was surprised by its results to compare to nondrinker.

  2. I am interested in my chosen topic about the globalization of English language because I notice that English take place in education, economic and the societies in others countries, and it required you to have knowledge of English. Since I was in the first grade of elementary school in china, I had English as a required subjects but ay that time I just treat English like the other courses and didn’t think about why and where I need this. This topic does affect me and reflect in the change of types of movies, episodes, music that I read and listened. The recruitment requirements of English in Chinese companies sparked my interest in my topic because I was wondering why it needed a English requirement in there and that how I decided to chose my topic. In my research I found that it is the globalization has affected the globalize of English language not the globalize of English causing the globalization.

  3. The topic I am writing about is discrimination towards people when they have a foreign language. I am interested in this topic because although I may not have a personal connection, I have seen the people people struggle to make themselves be understood, helped, and even just heard all due to their foreign accent. I think this is a topic that could be put there a little more since it does impact people in a variety of forms. Also, the United States consists of people from all over the world, it’s very diverse so you will definitely have people speaker in a different variety of forms. If they are to carry a heavy accent, they are most likely to be exposed to the discrimination out there.

  4. My topic is alcohol in adolescents. I am interested in this topic because I think I need to address this issue because it affects our society and its people negatively. I see that young youth are failing for it and it slowly destroying our innocent youth. No, I do not have any personal connection to it, but I see my surrounded people are connected to it. In my surrounded young youths who are addicted to drugs like alcohol. My topic does not affect me personally or directly but it is sad to see that adolescents are destroying their bright future. When I see that it happing in my surrounding I think this is what sparked me. I have already read something in my research that I found interesting. I did read something unexpected or something that surprised me. I read many statistics on how many adolescents are dead because of alcohol and destroy their future. How it slowly destroying them.

  5. I am interested in what are the most difficult obstacles facing new Chinese immigrants when learning English in ESL classes in the U.S.
I am writing it because I am a Chinese immigrant, and I would like to know what Chinese immigrants found most difficult when they are learning English, and if they are the ones that I faced before when I was in a ESL class. I haven’t really start reading my resources yet, but just skimmed through, and environment of the class is something I will look into.

  6. The topic I’m writing about is discrimination people with accents face. I chose this topic because it has to do with language. I have not personally experienced accent discrimination but I’m surprised that it happens more than people realize. Something I’ve read so far that was unexpected about accents is that people are untrsutful towards those who have an accent.

  7. I’m interested in cultural assimilation because as a child of immigrants, I always wondered how many other people like me were connected to their culture and how many people assimilated. I knew that there would be some people who would be very connected to their traditions and what their family practiced and some people who would be very whitewashed. What I didn’t know was how common (for lack of a better word) assimilation was or how assimilation can affect other cultures. Seeing instances where cultures would conform to emphasize English over their own language shocked me. I remember I saw a YouTube video about Indian accents and if native Indians were aware of their accent but what caught my attention was when someone mentioned that English in some cases was more important than speaking Hindi and other Indian languages. At the moment I haven’t found anything too specific since cultural assimilation is a very broad topic and it surprising doesn’t have too many resources regarding the effects of assimilation. What I did find interesting were some articles about cultural assimilation of Native Americans but nothing too specific at the moment.

  8. My stance on my chosen topic has to deal with the cultural discrimination that occurs within our modern society today. This topic had initially piqued my interest once I had noticed the significant impact that it had upon writers and their recollections of past hardships experienced. Similarly, I’ve come to find a personal connection to this topic as well, as I continue to experience a life where my parents are undermined by the acculturation of English standards by the general public. The fact that my parents have come to endure the effects of this discrimination, due to their own non-English accents and cultural expression, gives it all the more reason for me to explain how unjustified and unlawful this prejudice can amount to. After reading some of the research that I’ve collected, it’s safe to say that I am not the only one who shares this idea of this cultural appropriation to be unjust. As one known scholar comes to exclaim,“the degree of control we have over language is limited”. With this, the scholar goes on to complete a study in which she questions whether it is “desirable or even possible to balance the individual’s language rights with the needs of the community” or “an appropriate matter for majority rule… where the tyranny of the majority is a real threat…”

  9. The topic I’m focusing on is when is a person guilty of cultural appropriation. This topic sparked my interest after I saw various accusations of cultural appropriation on Twitter. In some cases I noticed people who weren’t of the culture being appropriated were giving their opinion as well and it made me wonder, are they qualified to give their opinion on such matter? In addition, most of the case weren’t actually culutal appropriation and the person who made the post always had to clarify and defend themselves. Lastly, I noticed some cultures actually view someone using their culture as appreciation and recognition. I want to focus on when is using a culture that is not you own actually crossing the line. I’ve found 2 articles focusing on research based on social media accusations and a couples of articles focusing on cultural appropriation in various places such as in work places, in art, in education, in music, etc. my goal is to find common denominators in these articles.

  10. The topic I chose to write about was the impact of Asian stereotypes on Asian American education. I chose this topic because initially, I was going to write about accent discrimination, but I felt that I would be rewriting another RAE but with research to back it up. As I was looking for research articles about my initial topic, I came across an article about
“Stereotype Threat and Educational Tracking: A Field Experiment in Chinese Vocational High Schools” and it made me more interested because recently, a student was being criticized by his mom and teacher. He committed suicide with no doubt whatsoever. I always knew how harsh the education system was in China but to come to the point where you would want to jump off your school building just to get away from school, that is a concern that more people should do research about. It came whether or not stereotypes do affect our academic performance so that is why I chose this topic. I also personally have a connection to it too because I myself have experienced these stereotypes whether it was my parents’ expectations of my teacher’s expectations. Because of that, I felt the need to try harder but at the end of the day, if I took an exam, I wouldn’t do so well not because I don’t have the knowledge but because of all the pressure or the expectation. I actually have read something interesting and it was examining and criticizing the positive and negative stereotypes surrounding Asian Americans. It was very unexpected because I assumed that positive ones would have a positive impact on one’s academic performance but it turned out from their experiments that it didn’t so that is what surprised me.

  11. My topic is how social media has a large amount of power in portraying minority groups.I feel like media is a large impact on how society views a certain group.I was interested in this topic because I have read and seen how big companies used a certain model skintone to make their product more appealing, and also the events in 2020 with looting the I felt like the news made it feel like people were criminals.

  12. My topic on global warming has interested me ever since I went to a March for Science protest. That is also the same reason I am a major in Environmental Engineering. I would like to further my knowledge on this subject and find out what I can learn more from this essay. I have also never formally written a researched paper. Global warming is something that we must start acknowledging now. It is happening now and being felt worldwide. Being able to write this essay will help not just myself, but also my peers to learn more about this topic.

  13. the topic I’m writing about is social media and its effect on society. i am writing about this topic because almost everyone uses social media and it has affected them in one way or another. these effects are either positive or negative and i am writing about both. this topic does affect me because sometimes i feel like i use social media too much or im letting it consume too much of my time, even though social media isn’t an entirely bad thing. what sparked my interest for this topic is basically the fact that so many people use social media like i said earlier.

  14. I am interested in my topic because it is a current issue that I have seen developing. We are currently living through a pandemic and it is taking a toll on many people’s mental health. My connection to this topic is experiencing the pandemic and it being hard at times to change the way I use to live. This topic does affect me because it has been a difficult time for a lot of people to live through this and deal with the anxiety of getting the virus and the uncertainty that comes with it. I was interested in this topic because I had seen this topic circulating on social media, people speaking about the effect Covid-19 has had on mental health. I have read interesting research surrounding what causes the changes in mental health throughout this pandemic.

  15. My topic focuses on language being used as a political tool, which I just find interesting because I enjoy learning deeper information about the politics of other countries and trying to understand how they function. It is not a topic that personally affects me or reflects any part of my life because it is happening in a country on the other side of the world, but the topic is fascinating and easy for me to research. I enjoy reading about it and learning more, so I am motivated to keep working on the paper. I haven’t found any sources that are particularly controversial or surprising yet, but that may be due to the politically charged nature of the topic and the fact that English media has already chosen a side for the most part.

  16. I am interested in the topic of “politics in social media” because of how relevant the topic is in the current society. I do not have any personal connection to it but stories about this topic often comes across me and I become slightly interesting in those stories. The topic does not affect me or my lived experience in any way but I am interested in how the topic affects other people which I will explore in my research. The unique way our current President utilizes social media sparked my interest in this topic. The controversy surrounding the way the current president utilizes social media is also another reason why I found this topic interesting.

  17. I chose to write about the deterioration of our oceans because the ocean harbors a countless number of living things. The ocean is like space, we don’t know much about it. However, we knowingly destroy whatever beauty it has left. Compared to a few centuries ago, the ocean has become a shadow of it’s former self. It’s sometimes unrecognizable in some of the smaller marine ecosystems. Personally, I have always loved the ocean. I enjoyed learning about what it’s depths hold. However, I was not aware of how drastic the issue was until my senior year in high school. I always knew the ocean was hurting, but when I learned about how increasing global temperature caused coral to weaken and lose their color, I started to delve deeper. The part that bothers me the most is how many countries know they are causing harmful, and even deadly, physical and chemical changes in the waters, but don’t always take action. And if laws or regulations are made, they are either weakly enforced or people go against it secretly. People do not realize that if the ocean was to deteriorate to the point where marine life ceases to exist, we would cease to exist along with it. But, people want business, money. They do not care for what they destroy because they believe they are in control. Although we are considered highly intelligent, many definitely lack intelligence pertaining to our coexistence with other species.

  18. My stance on my topic is that experiencing language discrimination in school can very negatively affect the development and perception of language in students. I mostly chose this topic because I have seen many friends experience it as well as family members, and I do find it very interesting. After doing a bit of research, I could see easily that the topic of language discrimination, in general, is far more complicated than I expected. In one of my main sources, the author describes 3 separate experiments as they took place, about how they tested whether children already show strong social preferences for peers who speak their native language with a familiar accent at a very young age. Such statistics are quite concerning, as they show that linguistic and language discrimination are far more deeply integrated within humans than may be expected at first glance. The specific source I speak of also states that while the idea that “more exposure leads to greater acceptance” is widely accepted to be true, there is no real evidence showing this to be true in this specific experiment. That was another piece of information that I found interesting as well as a bit controversial.

  19. My essay topic is English as the dominating language of our society. I will be focusing more specifically on how it dominates academics. I’ve always wondered why in such a diverse world and even such a diverse country that we live in that English was determined the “universal” language. So far I’ve read a lot about imperialism being one of the major reasons why English is so widespread. This was not surprising. It was also interesting to learn that many countries have opted to enforce learning English in school because they don’t want to be sort of “left behind” in a way, in the business and science world.

  20. I am writing about the negative impacts of Asian Americans being stereotyped as the “model minority”. I am interested in this topic because I feel like Asian stereotypes are mostly seen as good, but people don’t realize the implications of it. I wanted to show that any stereotype can be negative and how being considered the “model minority” undermines the efforts of Asians as they navigate life in America. As a person of Asian descent I have heard similar statements being made about me and have seen how this stereotype allows people to make assumptions about me when they nothing about who I am. I have also seen how my family and friends deal with this stereotype in their daily life. While I was doing research, one topic that interested me was the effect on mental health. Mental health is a touchy subject in many Asian communities but is important to address. Not only does being the “model minority” has a negative impact on mental health, but it also leads to people thinking that mental health is not an issue for Asian Americans. It is a complex cycle that I want to learn more about and hopefully explore in my essay.
