  1. The topic I will research is that immigration issues, and the government policies effect immigrates and the US. We always know the US is immigrant country. The government polices always affect that the national interest. During 2010-2018, The US immigrate average per year is 1,066,800. that is a massive number. I will explore what is the effect for US citizens and immigrants.

  2. Cultural assimilation (according to historyplex.com) is the concept in sociology in which an ethnic minority adopts the beliefs, languages, and customs of the dominant community, losing their own culture in the process. Children of immigrants are the prime examples of cultural assimilation as they tend to be the ones who want to fit in most with society by sacrificing their traditional culture to feel more connected to the culture of where they live (America being the biggest country for immigrants). While the entirety of a culture is by no means at the brink of extinction as a result, the relevance and the importance of said culture can become depreciated over time which can be damaging, for lack of a better word, to said culture as a whole. However, despite how common cultural assimilation can be in diverse countries populated by immigrants, such as the United States, it’s a topic that most immigrants and their children aren’t willing to touch base on. By understanding what effects on cultural assimilation has on minority cultures, society can better aid minorities in not only preserving but also embracing those cultures.

  3. Everyone faces difficulties when they first know about something or when they learn about something new, how to play a sport, or how to learn a new language. so of course, there will be obstacles facing new immigrants when learning English in ESL classes like hard to understand the teachers. However, what specific ones are they going to face whether reading, writing, listening or other difficulties and do where they from, and their learning environment or other things come in to play a role when new immigrants learn in ESL classes?

  4. My topic on global warming has interested me ever since I went to a March for Science protest. That is also the same reason I am a major in Environmental Engineering. I would like to further my knowledge on this subject and find out what I can learn more from this essay. I have also never formally written a researched paper. Global warming is something that we must start acknowledging now. It is happening now and being felt worldwide. Being able to write this essay will help not just myself, but also my peers to learn more about this topic.

  5. Thomas Malory’s “Le Morte d’Arthur” is one of the best-known works of literature to tell the tales of Arthurian Legend. Having been published in the 1480s, the book reflects the time, depicting a patriarchal society, and exemplifying the damsel in distress, where the woman is the trophy. An inherent suppression of women, whose perspectives and feelings weren’t quite represented in originating Arthurian legend, was a theme that was also prevalent. However, this perception was changed in the feminist retelling of the legend, “The Mists of Avalon” by Marion Zimmer Bradley. With this recreation, one can see a totally reversed society where the women are the ones who have the ability to use magic and thus hold the power. However, is it necessary to rewrite the story in order to find women being the ones with power?

    1. Your introduction to this topic is very interesting to me as a reader because you are attempting to touch on parts of history that are not discussed usually. The topic seems unique and new which grabs my attention as a reader. I am very interested in how you decide to explore the topic of Arthurian Legend.

  6. The topic I will research is English as a dominant language. I want to explore why English became such a dominant language in academia and why it’s so heavily enforced in our education system in the US. Also with a little skimming of potential sources, it seems like English is enforced in a lot of countries, not just the US. I will also touch on other language learning apart from English in the US.

    1. It will be a really interesting topic to research and will be interesting to learn about it. Yeah, it is true that the English language is a dominant language not just in the USA, but in other countries too. So, I hope you find some good sources to support your thoughts on the paper.

    2. I found this topic too, because there are so many languages out there why is English one of the most used, wide spread and dominant language, and I think it can trace back to English’s imperialism period and the role of the United States in the world now in many aspects.

    3. This is a great topic especially after the readings we have read in the class.I look forward to hopefully reading this research paper because I personally never given it much thought on why the English language is so heavily enforced so I think this would be a great topic to research and learn about

  7. The topic that I want to write my research paper about is analyzing how stereotype threats impact our education system. The reason why I wanted to choose this topic is that especially Asian stereotypes have an effect on how Asian students do in school because of this expectation they have to live by this norm, but in reality, it’s doing more harm than good. There was an article recently about a student who committed suicide because of the pressure he had. This got me thinking about how this idea of what is normal is perceived as more of a threat than good. I want to focus on how the development of stereotypes contributes to the obstacles that students are facing. When looking closely at these stereotypes, they aren’t true yet they cause racism and prejudice to occur. These stereotypes are actually dehumanizing us because we tend to prove ourselves and try to sway away from these stereotypes since many students are made fun of, but at the same time, it’s hard to live a successful life without hearing that you’re smart only because you’re Asian. This leads to the idea of how language plays a key role in our education and in developing what beliefs one should be concerned about but also how these negative stereotypes threaten a student’s ability in school.

    1. Definitely a topic that is well present in not just in the United States, but also East Asian countries in general. The amount of pressure that many East Asian students face is horrific considering how getting into the top school (singular) and getting perfect scores are stressed to the maximum. It doesn’t help that these “values” of education are carried over to the United States by those immigrants.

  8. For my research paper, I want to talk about alcohol in adolescence. In my research paper, I want to talk about how alcohol affects adolescents. To look at its effect, I want to focus on three main things. First, I want to focus on how alcohol affects adolescent brain development. Second, I want to focus on how alcohol leads to risky sex, and last I want to talk about how alcohol increases accidents and injuries. In my research paper, I want to show how alcohol is slowly destroying our innocent youth. So, to save our young youth what we can do to prevent underage drinking, and also why it is important to prevent underage drinking, and how we can make it possible.

  9. The topic that I have chosen, for this phase of the semester, has to deal with the apparent discrimination of different cultures and languages within the United States. After reading various different accounts of authors battling their linguistic way of life against the real world, it’s become widely evident that the societal world has come to possess many expectations of what they desire the average individual to be like. Whether it’s the way that they speak, their accent, or the way that they act within society, people belonging to non-English cultures have been singled out and profiled due to this difference. The fact that many different people belonging to different cultures (i.e author Safwat Saleem (Pakistani) and author Amy Tan (Chinese)) are targeted upon the same aspect, reveals that there is a common trend of discrimination within America. If the general public has come to glorify English and the American culture within society over other cultures, then it becomes safe to say that the hierarchy of language in America is in grave need of being reformed.

  10. The topic I wasn’t to write about is discrimination against people when they have a foreign accent. I find this topic very interesting because in the United States it is very diverse. There are people from all over the world which indicates how not all speak the same language or the same manner. Due to certain expectations or standards here in society, people tend to get discriminated or seen as different when they speak or attempt to speak the English language. When their first language is not English, they tend to have an accent when speaking. This accent of course is since speak mainly their foreign language. This causes them to be discriminated by many.

    1. You’ve provided a great foundation for this research essay, as you’ve mentioned how discrimination against foreign people with different accents remains prevalent within today’s world. One thing that I feel you can improve on is working towards generating a thesis at the end of this paragraph that ties together the insight you’ve provided. Good luck!

  11. My topic idea is the effect that Coronavirus has on the mental health of young adults. I have seen how this time period has been difficult for so many people. I know that it has been difficult for me at times, since I am not used to always staying home and it can feel like you are trapped. I know this topic has been spoken of because I have many friends and family that have voiced feeling this way during the pandemic as well. This topic interests me and I would like to delve deeper in it to find more information as to why this is occurring.

    1. This a topic that isn’t always talked about either. Mental health as a whole has not always been accepted or acknowledged, only becoming apart of mainstream recently. I believe your topic is both informative and influential, especially during this time.

    2. I think this topic is very interesting as well as important. During a time like this I think mental health is key, it should not be something we don’t focus on or push aside. I’m looking forward to possibly seeing what you wrote.

    3. This topic is definitely something very interesting to write about especially since it is a topic that can be opened for discussion. Mental health is essential and I think that it plays a huge role in our everyday lives.

  12. The topic idea for research is: What effect does social media have on society? I thought this was an interesting topic to research because social media is something that many of people in this country uses. Obviously social media has its positive and negative effects on society. I will be focusing on both positive and negative impacts. I have found 8 sources that I believe are good and reliable.

    1. I think this is a great start to your introduction in the sense that you know what exactly you want to answer in your research paper. There are many sources out there on the positive and negative impacts. I suggest you look for sources with experiments done which you can use for your argument. In terms of looking at the introduction breakdown sentences, I think you have all the information down, but you just need to rewrite in terms of providing us with research on what positive impacts or negative impacts you will be focusing on.

  13. For my research paper I want to explore the implications of Asian stereotyping. Many think that being considered the “model minority” is a good thing, but I want to display the negative effects of this stereotype. In this research paper I am going to look for and analyze the relationship between Asian stereotyping and mental health or career choices and how internalized stereotyping can have a negative impact on these populations.

  14. My topic idea for the researched essay will be Social Media and Politics. I will be researching how politicians utilize social media for positive and negative reasons. I will also be exploring the effects of social media politics on the users of social media. Research will be done to know the many unknown effects of this in our society since social media has become a huge part of our society. The topic is relevant today mostly because of the current president of United States who utilizes social media more than usual.

    1. The topic is overall a strong one and the research that’s available is viable. You describe its relevance to the current times and state the points of your research paper that you plan to cover. The thesis statement is one part of the introduction that can be elaborated upon in order to make it more clear to your readers.

  15. From the year 1994 to 2017, the population of immigrant children in the U.S has grown by an impressive 51%, numbering to around 19.6 million children, or one-quarter of all of the U.S children. Whether it be first generation or second generation, this massive population makes up a sizable number of the student population in America. Many come from less than fortunate backgrounds, aiming to build themselves up to success by attending schools and learning skills to be competitive in their future, and they are met with great success. However, despite the fact that such a large population of immigrants makes up the American student population, there is a concerning amount of disregard and discrimination these students have to experience in the education system. Specifically, there is a lot of prevalent linguistic and language discrimination felt by these populations. Many have brushed off such ideas of “Language discrimination”, arguing that America is more diverse and accepting than it ever has been, and while perhaps there is some truth to such sentiment, it is not nearly that cut and dry. The effects of such language discrimination are worryingly prevalent, especially in younger students that experience such things earlier on in their life. After all, it is difficult to imagine how discouraging it would be to feel that the very language that you speak with your loved ones, and those close to you, is inferior and unimportant. As it stands, experiencing language discrimination in school can very negatively affect the development and perception of language in students.

  16. The topic that I chose for this researched essay is “The cost of the globalization of English”. I want to research about this topic because I was wondering for a long time that how English started the globalization and how it affects the people in other countries with their education and the societies. In the current day, most of the country are having English courses as their required subject and a lots of companies in countries that do not have English as their national language they required the employees to speak, read and understanding English that in countries that do not have English as their national language.

  17. We see the idea of “serial killers” in movies, horror stories, books and many more. But have you ever wondered if these killers are born to kill or made into killers? Serial killers are known to be people who committee a series of murders, usually more than three, and have a similar pattern in the way they behave. I believe serial killers are made into becoming murderers from a young age rather than being born with the intention to murder.

  18. Although humans may admire the ocean, we implement various environmental factors that cause both physical and chemical changes within the waters. Ocean temperatures are rising, fish are dying quicker than they can reproduce, whales are being hunted for no logical reason, ecosystems are beyond recognition and seas of trash layer the surface

    1. Straight and to the point. It is easy to figure out your topic simply from just these two sentences. I would recommend expanding a bit and including a thesis to make it easier on the reader once you have your entire essay created. Perhaps include a short example of a counter argument if you deem it useful.

    2. This topic interests me as well. I have read articles about the changes occurring in the ocean and have seen all the trash and debris that is thrown into the ocean is horrible. Will you touch upon every topic you have listed or narrow it down more? Also will this be an argumentative essay that shows other sides to the topic? I would love to learn more about this. The ocean is such a large part of our world and it’s sad to see that we are ruining it.
